[tweetmeme source=”ibethyap”] Initially, the cover struck me, shallow as I may be, but I keep on judging the book by it’s cover. Secondly, I was intrigued by the summary of the story. I believe in the concept of soul mates. And I get goosebumps contemplating on the possibility that there is someone out there just for you. Someone to whom you can relate to. Someone comfortable to talk to, sharing similarities. Even if you’re not destined to be together as lovers in one lifetime, sometimes, getting to know that person is already enough.
Reading this book made me wonder on the real purpose of life. Just like Daniel, he kept on returning to life to correct a mistake he made in his first life. Falling in love with the same woman over and over again. Seeing each other at a different age, status, yet the feeling remains the same. He was in love with Sophia in whatever form she may be. The idea may sound absurd but I can totally understand how that feels to know she’s the one whether it be a happy ending or not.
It might be painful to keep seeing her and yet you can’t have her because she’s your brother’s wife, your sister or even mother. It’s even more painful when you can remember everything yet she can’t. Trying your best to make her remember and in the end scaring her away. Sometimes, life is just cruel. With a help from destiny, they should meet at a perfect date and time and make things right so that they can be truly happy. I can totally grasp the concept.
The two of them might live different lives but I really don’t grasp how can soul mates find companionship with another person. This is a disturbing thought. It’s like being unloyal to your loved one. And I can’t tolerate it at all.
Of all the life form of Sophia, I like Constance best, she must have really cared for Daniel to the point of willing to die with him so that they could be together. It’s not really a sacrifice but the thought of living alone is something hard to imagine. She also made it a point to guide the next Sophia to remember Daniel. She’s really good.
The cons of the book:
I’m not a fan of switching point of views in the story. It’s an intriguing style but it’s really confusing to focus on the flow of the story. I’ve read a few books with this kind of style, Red Pyramid, The Amulet of Samarkand and now this. All of which I didn’t enjoy much.
A lot of the parts were boring. At the back of my mind, it’s saying “C’mon, meet already!” There were lots of dragging and dull moments. A lot of introduction to their love story, some are really irrelevant. They spent too little time together. Most of the time they are looking for each other.
During the time where Daniel realized to kill himself so that they would grow together. After a few centuries of various age gaps, now is the only time you realized that? Whew! Boy, he must be stupid. Don’t get me wrong. I really like Daniel because he’s super sweet. What I can’t take is he doesn’t have the guts to do whatever he likes because he’s afraid.
***SPOILER***
This book is the worst ending book I’ve ever read. Not only was it not a happy ending. A lot of the story line was not ended properly. We didn’t really know what happened to Joaquim. And how pathetic is Daniel reincarnating to be her son. I’m sorry! I’ve taken in a lot of emotions reading this book. I feel for Daniel and Lucy. I want them to be happy. For the whole duration of the book, it seems that they were only together for 2 chapters. The rest are just crap!
Despite my disappointment in the book, my faith in reincarnation stands still. I know and still believe that some people are just meant to be together.
